Zoonosis is a disease or parasite that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Zoonotic parasite infections can affect the skin, eyes, brain, intestinal tract, liver and lungs. Roundworms and Hookworms are two of the most common zoonotic parasites that can be carried and transmitted by our pets. Transmission occurs through accidental oral ingestion of parasite eggs or penetration of the skin by parasite larvae (Hookworms only).
The Center for Disease Control and the Companion Animal Parasite Council are recommending that pet owners administer year-round preventative medicines that control parasites. Talk to your veterinarian for information on preventative medications that are available.
Other tips to help reduce/prevent zoonosis:
• Regular stool sample checks by your veterinarian
• Avoid unprotected sand boxes
• Wash hands often-especially after playing with pets
• Promptly collect animal feces in your environment and dispose of
