What is Zoonosis?

Friday, March 5, 2010 1:24:08 PM PST

Zoonosis is a disease or parasite that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Zoonotic parasite infections can affect the skin, eyes, brain, intestinal tract, liver and lungs. Roundworms and Hookworms are two of the most common zoonotic parasites that can be carried and transmitted by our pets. Transmission occurs through accidental oral ingestion of parasite eggs or penetration of the skin by parasite larvae (Hookworms only).

The Center for Disease Control and the Companion Animal Parasite Council are recommending that pet owners administer year-round preventative medicines that control parasites. Talk to your veterinarian for information on preventative medications that are available.

Other tips to help reduce/prevent zoonosis:

• Regular stool sample checks by your veterinarian
• Avoid unprotected sand boxes
• Wash hands often-especially after playing with pets
• Promptly collect animal feces in your environment and dispose of

February is National Pet Dental Month

Sunday, January 31, 2010 8:43:17 PM PST

Ensuring that your pet maintains a healthy mouth is not just about preventing bad breath. Poor oral hygiene can lead to periodontal disease, tooth loss, and other serious health problems, such as heart, liver and kidney failure.

There are many tools available to help maintain your pet's oral health, such as diet, brushing, special rawhide chews, and chew toys.

If your pet already has moderate to severe dental disease, he will require professional teeth cleaning, followed by a maintenance program which could include some of the tools mentioned previously.

Holiday Tips

Tips to keep your pets safe and healthy over the holidays.

• Hang non-breakable ornaments near the bottom of the tree.

• Tinsel can be deadly when eaten.

• Mistletoe and Poinsettias are toxic.

• Turkey bones are not safe! Stick to "bones" that are specifically designed for dogs to chew.

• Do not give pets as surprise gifts! It may seem like the perfect gift, but many of these pets end up at animal shelters. A pet takes a real time commitment.

Organic Shampoo

Thursday, October 1, 2009 10:51:23 AM PDT

There are many high-quality organic shampoos available. Make sure that it says "Certified Organic" pet shampoo. Many of the shampoos on the market contain chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Diethanolacomine (DEA), Alchohol and/or fragrances. These ingredients can cause hair loss, drying of skin and inflammation.
